Scalar Approximation of Super-Gaussian Beams

Abstract
The longitudinal field energy Ez is proved to be a conserved quantity independent of the position z of the beam cross-section if only the first-order correction is made for the scalar super-Gaussian fieldεx. The value of Ez depends only on the distribution of the scalar field εx, its size stands for the degree of the scalar approximation of the transverse field εx, and the higher order of the super-Gaussian field, the worse degree of the scalar approximation. Two parameters are suggested to distinguish the degree of the scalar approximation for various super-Gaussian beams, and their ranges are also discussed.
